As a coach, athletic director or any professional who holds a leadership role in athletics, your worst fear is a bench full of your top athletes sidelined due to injury. In this day and age, that is a reality faced in sports across the board. Injury is a risk you take as an athlete, a high risk; and unfortunately, it is an inevitable issue that a coach or athletic director must face at some point in his or her career. Contact sports involving cutting, jumping and pivoting such as soccer, basketball, football and lacrosse hold the highest risk of knee injuries, namely an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury.
Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury Facts
• Females athletes have a 2 to 10-fold increase in the incidence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries compared to their male counterparts due to anatomical, hormonal, and neuromuscular factors
• Over 50% of those who have an ACL injury will suffer additional damage to the knee joint, including tears to the menisci or other knee ligaments
• At least 75% will also incur damage to the articular cartilage, which may lead to future arthritis
• The majority will lose an entire athletic season, possible scholarship funding, and some suffer lowered academic performance and class attendance.
• Average cost for a knee ligament reconstruction and postoperative rehabilitation $17,000
Can We Decrease the Risk of ACL Injuries in Female Athletes?
Over 15 years ago, Dr. Frank Noyes and researchers at the Cincinnati Sportsmedicine Research and Education Foundation were the first to develop a training program to correct neuromuscular problems in female athletes. No other knee injury prevention program has undergone as rigorous a validation process as Sportsmetrics in regard to preventing ACL injuries and improving neuromuscular problems in female athletes.
The training is comprised of 6 weeks of jump training, strength training and flexibility with the goal of improving the strength of the hamstrings and to teach athletes to land in safe positions from a jump, with proper body positioning
After 6 weeks of training, the program has been scientifically proven to significantly:
-decrease harmful peak landing forces
-decrease medial/lateral torques at the knee (wobbly knee)
-increase hamstrings power and strength
-increase hamstrings-to-quadriceps peak torque ratios
-increase vertical jump height
